Our Work In Sierra Leone:

Partners In Health (PIH) began supporting the government of Sierra Leone in response to the Ebola epidemic in October 2014. Recognizing the large need for continued investments in the health system after Ebola, PIH is committed to long-term health system strengthening in support of the Ministry of Health and Sanitation (MOHS), guided by the same principles as our emergency response and our work around the world: public sector accompaniment, integrated and comprehensive services, social justice, nimbleness and flexibility, partnership, community ownership, and evidence-based interventions. In the aftermath of the epidemic, PIH is committed to supporting the delivery of comprehensive health services in Sierra Leone, from the community level to the health center and to referral hospitals.

 

Position Overview:

The Pharmacy Technician under the supervision of a Licensed Pharmacist, help the Pharmacist to provide and other medication health care products to patients and consumers, ensure timely and effective communication and collaboration among stakeholders such as PIH/Well Body Clinic, Koidu Government Hospital and any other hospitals. The Pharmacy Technician must be an advocate for improving health care in Kono District.

 





Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Work under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist
    • Provide, prepare, and dispense medications for patients as prescribed by the Doctor or CHO Ensure accountability of medications and other consumables provided to the dispensar
    • Account for wastage of medications and consumables that were not used in the ward but became unusable
    • Label medications appropriately
    • Stock shelves and ensure an adequate supply of medications and consumables
    • Keep pediatric dispensary clean and organized
    • Ensure emergency supplies are available to pediatric staff for changes in patient care that may occur while the District Pharmacist is not available
    • Require on-call service for access to medications during the night or on weekends
    • Maintain confidential and accurate pharmacy records
    • Other functions as requested by pharmacy superiors or a reasonable request from clinical staff in the ward for assistance regarding medications
    • Complete understanding and appreciation of the use and side effects of prescription
    • Collect, organize, and evaluation of patient information in regard to medications
    • Providing drug information and evaluation to patients
    • Promote rational drug use
    • Maintain pharmacy inventory by checking pharmaceutical stocks to determine inventory levels and anticipate needed medication and supplies Placing and expediting orders, verifying receipts and removing outdated drugs

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Diploma in pharmacy
  • At least two years of formal work experience
  • Computer literacy and experience in Office programs: Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.
  • Ability to be flexible and effective in the face of unexpected challenges
  • Strong interpersonal skills; experience in counseling preferred
  • Proven ability to exercise good judgment, ensure patient confidentiality, and approach sensitive topics with respect
  • Commitment to social justice in health care issues.
  • Sense of humor and flexible disposition.
  • Ability to live in rural Kono District for the full duration of the contract
