Job Vacancy at Kings Sierra Leone Partnership – Clinical Training Volunteer
Overview
King’s Sierra Leone Partnership is launching an exciting new project focused on improving care in emergency rooms in hospitals across Sierra Leone.
Through training and systems change, this project will ensure that patients access the best possible emergency care. We are recruiting a collaborative team of 5 experienced clinicians to lead this work: 3 international volunteers and 2 Sierra Leonean team members. Together the team will together deliver a ‘Training of Trainers’ session; mentor trainees in 16 facilities nationwide; and review emergency care processes to establish best practice.
The opportunity
This is a fantastic opportunity to be involved in a small, high-impact team in Sierra Leone. Between September 2021 and November 2021, this team will:
Run a Training of Trainers for 70 emergency room health workers in South African Triage Scale (SATS), Basic Emergency Care (BEC), Primary Trauma Care (PTC) and pedagogy
Support these 70 emergency room health workers to roll out their training to 250 multidisciplinary health workers in 16 hospitals
Work with the Medical Superintendents and Matrons to review emergency care systems in 16 facilities and make recommendations for system improvements
Run a learning conference to establish action plans for each facility
The team will work in partnership across all activities. There is a strong emphasis on learning from and working with the healthcare workers in facilities, collaboratively designing solutions and training packages which are appropriate for the environment.
The team will be supported by King’s Global Health Partnership’s team in the UK and in Sierra Leone, with operations, logistics, financial and project management support.
All transport and accommodation out of Freetown will be provided as well as facilitators fee, paid in Leones, as you will be travelling away from your normal place of work.
Who do we want?
We are seeking a Sierra Leonean Clinical Training Volunteer who will implement training, mentorship and systems review. Working with a Clinical Project Lead Volunteer and Clinical Training Volunteers from the UK and Sierra Leone, the Clinical Training Volunteers will:
Develop high-quality context-specific training materials (SATS, BEC, PTC and pedagogy)
Run a ‘Training of Trainers’ course for 70 emergency room health workers
Mentor these health workers through on-site or remote visits across 16 health facilities
Review emergency room systems and develop recommendations for system changes to enable high quality patient care
Essential:
Substantial post medical or nursing experience (4 years or more)
Minimum 1 year experience working in an emergency/outpatient department in Sierra Leone
Experience in delivering training or teaching
Experience in using the SATS
Desirable:
Experience in working as part of a multi-cultural team
Experience in systems change
Experience in designing or adapting training material
Experience in the specific training packages (SATS, BEC, PTC and pedagogy)
When?
This project will run from late September 2021 to 30 November 2021. We are happy to discuss your circumstances if you are interested in the post; the information below is provided as a guide.
Stage 1: Remote volunteering: The first few weeks of the project will establish training plans and can therefore be done remotely. It is expected to be part-time during this period (2-3 days/week).
Stage 2: In Sierra Leone: We anticipate that the first in-person activity (the training event) will be held in Sierra Leone in early October. It’s therefore essential that the post holder is available to facilitate the activities from the end of September until the conclusion of the activities in early November.
Stage 3: Remote volunteering or in Sierra Leone: From late October to end of November, this role could be either remote or in Sierra Leone. If remote, it is expected that this will be part time during this period (1-2 days/week).
This role is advertised as part time, approximately 15 days per month, it will still include significant cross-country travel as well as dedication and enthusiasm from the post holder. We will have a cohort of training volunteers who will rely on the successful candidates' continued involvement in this project.
