ABOUT WANEP-SIERRA LEONE

The West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP) Sierra Leone was established in 1998 and is registered with the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development in Sierra Leone. WANEP-SL is a well-established national network of peacebuilding civil society organizations including women’s groups, youth groups, and religious institutions committed to encouraging, facilitating, and mobilizing local initiatives for peacebuilding, promotion of gender justice, conflict resolutions, and transformation. WANEP-SL is a membership network with over 50 registered organizations across the country with a shared responsibility and interest to prevent conflict and build peace in Sierra Leone.

We envision a Sierra Leone characterized by just and peaceful communities where the dignity of the human person is paramount and where the people can meet their basic human needs and decide their own direction, we seek to enable and facilitate the development of mechanisms for cooperation among civil society-based peacebuilding practitioners and organizations by promoting cooperative responses to violence and conflict in Sierra Leone.

JOB PURPOSE: 

In line with our continuous engagement and the need to train, mentor, and develop upcoming peacebuilding practitioners through participation in our intervention across Sierra Leone we are in the process of recruiting five (5) volunteers passionate about community development and peacebuilding to promote the aims, objectives, and cores values of WANEP-Sierra Leone.

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

YOUTH FOR PEACE VOLUNTEERS 

    • Assist in coordinating activities related to Peace Education at the secretariat.
    • Support in the development of a national Peace Education strategy for the coordination of network members/school peace clubs
    • Support with the coordination of the secretariat of the Youth for Peace Network members
    • Support the Youth for Peace Officer to prepare quarterly/annual activity plans and narrative reports of project activities.
  • Follow up on Youth for Peace Network member’s activities and peace clubs.
  • Liaising with partners including Youth groups, Y4P Members, and Peace Clubs to ensure the smooth day-to-day functioning of the Peace Education programs and activities.
  • Assist in the facilitation of training modules for peace club supervisors in schools.
  • Support other departments with project implementation when needed.

 

WOMEN’s PEACE AND SECURITY VOLUNTEERS

    • Assist in coordinating activities related to Women’s Peace and Security-related issues.
    • Support with the preparation of quarterly/annual activity plans and narrative reports of project activities.
  • Support with monitoring and collating information related to women’s peace and security threats issues.
  • Support liaising with partners including WIPNET members to ensure the smooth day-to-day functioning of the WIPNET programs and activities.
  • Assist in the facilitation of training modules for women in peacebuilding and other thematic areas.
  • Support the NEWS team in analyzing the security situation of women in the production of early warning reports including News bulletins, policy briefs, and other reports when needed/requested on a weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual basis.
  • Support the submission of timely reports of activities to the program manager on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis.

 

NEWS VOLUNTEERS

    • Assist in coordinating activities related to WARN (West Africa Early Warning System) at the national level in collaboration with the NEWS Officer
  • Support with monitoring and collating information related to peace and human security threats and help with inputting the data into the NEWS, ECOWARN, and AU
  • Liaising with all the NEWS community monitors to ensure the smooth day-to-day functioning of NEWS.
  • Assist in the facilitation of training modules for early warning and strategic responses for field monitors.
  • Work with the NEWS Officer and Manager in Analyzing the security situation and initiate the production of early warning reports including News bulletins, policy briefs, and other reports when needed/requested on a weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual basis.
    • Support with the filing of the field monitors report on a timely basis in the WANEP NEWS platform
    • Monitors court sittings on issues related to peace and security.
  • Support various programs or other initiatives at the secretariat as may be directed by the Acting NNC, NEWS Manager, NEWS Officer, and other senior officials of the national secretariat and the regional office.
  • Support other departments with project implementation when needed.

 

OTHER DUTIES  

  • Other duties as required, including occasional work on weekends if needed.

Purpose of the Job

  • To provide reliable leadership in all media ad communication programs of the organization
  • To provide technical backstopping and supervision for social workers In all media programs at community level with the project objective and strategies

Key responsibilities 

  • To build and maintain excellent relationships with relevant journalists, broadcasters and blogers
  • To draft media announcements, releases and programs.

The opportunity

BBC Media Action is looking for radio drama actors to contribute to its planned radio drama on girl’s empowerment in Sierra Leone. The drama is part of our ongoing national radio programme called Wae Gyl Pekin Tinap, implemented by the EAGER (Every Adolescent Girl Empowered and Resilient) consortium with funding from the UK government. Our girl-led content aims to give a platform to groups which don’t often have a voice. We aim to be positive, and solutions focused, creating a more supportive environment around girls by showing audiences what girls can achieve when they are valued, listened to, believed in, and encouraged. The actors will be assigned different roles and expected to demonstrate awareness of the programme objective and focus.

 

Person specification

The ideal candidates are people that are:

  • 18 years old or above

  • Can read and understand Krio

  • Can read and write in English

  • Have a good voice for radio drama

  • Be passionate about radio drama and drama generally

  • Be curious, hardworking, willing to learn and responsive to feedback

The Production Assistant will work as part of the radio production team – working under the supervision of the Senior Producer on our girls’ empowerment radio programme.

They will research content ideas, set up and conduct interviews, record reports and packages and edit audio. They may also have the opportunity to present programmes.

As well as editorial assignments, the Production Assistant will be required to support with administrative tasks such as helping with budgets and advance or payment requests – for example to pay contributors or facilitate field travel.




The Production Assistant will be based in the BBC Media Action office in Freetown but some travel to the provinces may be required.

1.) SME OFFICER

3.) FINANCE OFFICER

Are you an organized team player with great attention to detail?

We are looking for a Finance Officer, who will work alongside the General Manager, the Marketing and Programming Department. You will be responsible for leading all financial reporting and analysis, and financial management for programming, rate cards, and day to day running costs.

MAJOR ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Prepares financial statements, corporate financial and integrated reports for Fry Fry Media (SL) Limited using appropriate technology.

Monitors, critically evaluates, and advises on the relevant accounting standards, regulations, conceptual and financial reporting frameworks

Prepare Fry Fry Media monthly payroll and ensure all statutory payments are paid on or before the due date.

Responsible for processing all monthly disbursements and receipts, included but not limited to coding invoices, obtaining approvals, following up with vendors and employees and ensure they are reported in the correct accounting period.

Responsible for the timely recording of all transactions in QuickBooks.

Take lead in month end closing process and ensure monthly transactions are recorded in the correct accounting period and archived in the correct file.

Assist with auditor inquiries and year-end tax schedules.

Petty cash account distribution and reconciliation

Process Accounts Payable which include coding invoices, obtaining approvals, following up with vendor and employee inquiries and assisting with month-end procedures

BBC Media Action is the international development charity of the BBC, using media and communication to help reduce poverty and support people in claiming their rights. Our aim is to inform, connect and empower people around the world. BBC Media Action has been operating in Sierra Leone since 2007.

BBC Media Action has a number of current and planned projects addressing a range of themes.  BBC Media Action produces creative programmes in multiple formats – such as radio and social media – that inform and engage audiences around key development issues and also seeks to strengthen the media sector through capacity building partnerships. BBC Media Action works with over 60 radio stations across the country, as broadcast and/or capacity strengthening partners.

BBC Media Action is seeking Radio Monitors to listen and report on the EAGER national radio programme produced by Media Action and broadcast by partner radio stations. We are seeking enthusiastic individuals, with radio listening attitude and with the ability to read, write and follow simple instructions.




Purpose:

The Radio Monitors will listen to assigned radio station(s) on a weekly or daily basis to ascertain the broadcast of the BBC Media Action produced EAGER national radio programme. The Monitors will also listen for broadcast of local radio programme produced by the assigned radio station(s) in a weekly basis. The Monitors will work closely with the EAGER Project Assistant for smooth and effective implementation of their functions and they will remain anonymous to the assigned radio station(s) throughout their contract.

The Radio Monitors will be supervised and supported by the EAGER Project Assistant based in Freetown.

Main duties:

  • To listen on a weekly or daily basis to assigned radio stations to ascertain broadcast of EAGER national and local radio programmes.

  • To provide report on a weekly basis based on the template that will be provided.

  • To provide accountability on equipment that will be provided by the project.

  • To comply with BBC Media Action policy and procedures.

 

Required Qualification and Skills:

  • Ability to read and write preferably has obtain Basic Education Certificate,

  • Reside within the radius or frequency of the assigned radio stations,

  • Regular radio listener,

  • Familiar with BBC Media Action radio programmes is a plus.

  • Must be above 18 years.

In Sierra Leone, BBC Media Action produces national radio programming on a range of health, gender and rights issues. It also works to support and strengthen the capacity of local media through mentoring and training. BBC Media Action has been operating in Sierra Leone since 2007.





The Production Assistant -Drama writer role may involve working with groups of children and vulnerable adults and will absolutely require effective working knowledge of safeguarding policies and procedures in relation to protection of children and vulnerable adults. For the successful candidate, mandatory training will be provided on BBC Media Action’s safeguarding policy and staff code of conduct.
