PIH currently has implementation programs in Haiti, Rwanda, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Peru, Mexico, Russia, Sierra Leone and Navajo Nation. Through our partnership with Harvard Medical School and the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, we support a wide range of programs in dozens of other countries around the world.

Our Work In Sierra Leone:

Partners In Health (PIH) began supporting the government of Sierra Leone in response to the Ebola epidemic in October 2014. Recognizing the large need for continued investments in the health system after Ebola, PIH is committed to long-term health system strengthening in support of the Ministry of Health and Sanitation (MOHS), guided by the same principles as our emergency response and our work around the world: public sector accompaniment, integrated and comprehensive services, social justice, nimbleness and flexibility, partnership, community ownership, and evidence-based interventions. In the aftermath of the epidemic, PIH is committed to supporting the delivery of comprehensive health services in Sierra Leone, from the community level to the health center and to referral hospitals.





Position Overview

The driver is responsible to drive PIH vehicle in a secure and defensive driving manner for the safety of the vehicle, people onboard the vehicle and other road users, while facilitating their movement, goods, equipment and, or supplies in accordance with PIH-SL values and expectations. The driver actively finds ways to meet the needs of our patients during referrals, remaining flexible and open to creating possibilities on how to serve them better. He/she maintains relevant onboard documents as evidence of transparent movement of vehicles, avoiding change of directions without regard to agreed plans and follows preventive maintenance practices while proactively reporting related problems in a clear written or verbal communication.

The driver is a direct representative of PIH in the community we serve and therefore should behave well, portray good image of the organization whiles expressing how his work can contribute to PIH’s mission and vision. In team spirit he/she learns from others and look for ways to incorporate their ideas, requesting and seeking to understand feedback for the smooth running of PIH operations.





Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

To perform daily vehicle routine checks while completing a checklist for the attention of maintenance coordinator and to assist when a colleague needs help.

To keep both the interior and exterior part of assigned vehicle clean and tidy, understanding how this may impact others, most importantly those we serve.

To fasten seat belt before driving and to ensure all persons onboard the vehicle do likewise in order to maximize safety impact to commuters.

To ensure there is enough fuel to complete a trip without bringing the vehicle to halt while measuring progress on set target.

To facilitate the replacement and repair of tires by keeping them inflated to the correct pressure.

To ensure license and vehicle insurance is updated whiles going above and beyond to work well across culture and background.

To keep luggage and passenger number within safety limit of the vehicle while looking for efficient ways of doing things better without compromising PIH values and expectations.

To drive with care, responsibly considering the appropriate speed limit relative to road, weather and traffic condition but not exceeding 80km on the highway or 30-40km within township while delivering quality service but still working with urgency.

Not to drive PIH vehicle under the influence of drug or alcohol, articulating how your work contributes to PIH’s mission and vision.

To obey security regulations established for passing through road blocks, customs, and checkpoints with regard to how fleet operations fit into organizational mission and strategy.

To keep phone active for effective communication but not to make or receive call while driving anticipating the problem and adjusting for changing situation.





To present the vehicle swiftly for next allocation upon accomplishing assigned task while communicating progress clearly.

To accompany the patient and become a “net” giver, willing to help by giving talent and, to deliver patient referral forms with dignity whiles appreciating sensitive and confidential nature of information.

To avoid unnecessary stop on patient referrer from point A to point B maximizing the impact and thinking about how to give best possible service to the patient.

Not to carry unnecessary equipment on board an ambulance or going out of the way while looking for ways to do things better, faster and less costly without compromising the need of patients.

To ensure an ambulance vehicle used in referrers can handle road condition without fear of breaking down, not to give up easily if road breakdown feels too hard and to understand what is supposed to be done.

To notify referrer coordinators at both facilities for a permission to leave with courage to say no to anything that may course distraction from doing well things already committed to.

To handle all adverse situations along the route and to persist with optimism and firmness even in the face of difficulty.

To notify the supervisor, Operations or Clinical Director and the police in time of accident, actively working to ensure the right people have the right information and at the right time.

Not handing over vehicle key to an unauthorized person, anticipating related risk and adjusting for changing circumstance.

To fully and progressively document all vehicle movement on fuel request form while prioritizing and devoting time to work related movement.





To request for or collect any package addressed to same locations of vehicle coverage areas and to ensure delivery note or waybill are signed by authorized persons.

Not to allow arms or ammunition to be transported onboard PIH vehicle knowing it may not benefit those we serve.

Be in readiness to support others on the team and in good character treat them with respect, listen genuinely, embrace and learn from the voices of others.

To attend all regular or occasional PIH meetings sharing honest views in an easy way for others to understand.

At Partners In Health, we are committed to ensuring that those who benefit from our work- including our patients, families and community members – as well as our staff are treated with dignity and respect and protected from sexual exploitation, abuse and sexual harassment. Qualifications

Minimum of 3 passes in The West African Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSE)/General Certificate Examination (G.C.E. “O” Level)

Minimum of 5 years of driving experience preferably for a Non-Governmental Organization.

Strong initiative and self-motivated, with a strong commitment to teamwork and humanitarian principle

Flexible, enthusiastic and willing to learn from others

Disciplined and ready to take work seriously

Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships in a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary environment

Energy and stamina to withstand long working hours and often stressful conditions

Having fast analytical skills for risk assessment and able to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple tasks simultaneously

Interest in social justice, healthcare, and a preferential option for the poor

Demonstrate ability to interact professionally with multicultural staff, the patient that we serve and partners

Professional proficiency in Krio is required. Proficiency in English is desired

Must not hold dual employment
