Location: Makeni (various locations – Bombali, Falaba, Karene and Koinadugu
Duration: August 2022 to August 2025
ORGANIZATION BACKGROUND
Street Child of Sierra Leone (SCoSL) is a local Non-Governmental Organization promoting the right to education and child protection for children in the most remote communities in Sierra Leone.
We believe that every child deserves the right to live in a safe place, secure home and above all, have the chance to receive a quality education. As an organization, our key focus is helping children into schools-and ensuring that they stay there. For those that have no access to education, we work towards creating access in some of the most remote parts of the country, ensuring that no child is left behind.
PROJECT SUMMARY
SCoSL – through its main partner Street Child UK – is implementing a three-year education project in four districts. This project will target retaining highly vulnerable categories of children in schools. The specific categories of children will include:
- girls engaged in or vulnerable to transactional sex
- teenage mothers
- children affected by disability
- children in border communities at risk of trafficking
- children in remote and marginalized communities
- children in the poorest households
- street-connected children, including those involved in child labour
The 4 objectives of this project are to:
- Provide individualized support to high-risk children with social support, to reduce the risk of dropout
- Provide student centered instruction to ensure children have access to appropriate content – as required for their learning level
- Provide strong school leadership to ensure children have access to engaged excellent teachers to accelerate their learning
- Provide shared school ownership to ensure children have access to safe and secure learning environments
KEY TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Providing in-class mentoring support for teachers in issues such as effective lesson planning and teaching techniques
- Provide training and mentoring support to teachers in the project supported schools on the Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) teaching methodology.
- Conducting additional and specialist training workshops for teachers
- Monitoring teaching and learning in schools
- Building a close relationship with Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE) at District level
- Report to their line manager, and submit weekly work plans in line with the main implementation plans of the project
- Support preparation of project narrative reports, for donor reporting and other fundraising purposes, to be submitted to their line manager
- Relate regularly with line ministries in the districts in the implementation of project activities
- Any other duties as delegated/instructed by their line manager
Note: The duties and responsibilities as set out above are not exhaustive and the role holder may be required to carry out additional duties within reasonableness of their level of skills and experience
PERSON SPECIFICATION
EDUCATION AND JOB-RELATED SKILLS
- Minimum should possess a degree in education or equivalent qualification, or have significant experience working in education
- Effective communication skills, fluent English writing, and verbal skills, with strong negotiation skills
- Advanced skills in internet use, Microsoft, PowerPoint and Excel
- Project coordination qualifications or experience an added advantage
RELEVANT WORK EXPERIENCE
- Minimum three to five years demonstrated working experience in the education sector
- Experience using mobile data collection tools
- Experience working with teachers
- Experience of working on internationally funded projects by donors such as EU, FCDO, USAID and UN agencies
- Demonstrable working knowledge of supporting and working with communities and schools

- Identify and support at-risk school students
- Develop case files for all beneficiaries
- Establish and sustain mentoring relationships with relevant schools
- Complete supervisory trips of relevant schools, beneficiaries and other field project sites in implementation of project activities
- Conduct verification of beneficiaries as and when required
- Report to their line manager, and submit weekly work plans in line with the main implementation plans of the project
- Support preparation of project narrative reports, for donor reporting and other fundraising purposes, to be submitted to their line manager
- Engage with School Management Capacities on increasing school leadership and ownership
- Relate regularly with line ministries in the districts in the implementation of project activities
