The role of the Social Worker is to work with children with disabilities and their families to help to maintain a loving and supportive family unit, which nurtures and develops the child to reach their full potential. They will do this with a kind, compassionate, supportive, and professional approach. A child being born with or acquiring a disability can lead to family breakdown, and so counselling and psycho-social support will be a main part of the job role. In addition to this, the social worker will be expected to work with the Enable the Children team members, local partners, and the Ministry of Social Welfare to help advocate for, support, and protect children with disabilities.
They will also do community and other forms of sensitization to help address issues of stigma, discrimination, and abuse which children with disabilities and their families often face. The Social Worker will develop relationships within communities, especially with schools and community leaders and make referrals to appropriate support services if they identify anyone facing abuse. They will keep clear case notes on their therapeutic interventions and the children and family’s progress. Social Worker will also help in the running of Family Support groups and other Enable the Children events. They will also assist in representing World Hope at coordination meetings, at the national and local level. They will refer cases to law enforcement as needed, and follow-up cases to the judicial level.
Major Roles and Responsibilities
- Provide psycho-social support and counselling to children with disabilities and their families - Liaise with local partners, Ministry of Social Welfare, and other Ministries to protect children with disabilities from abuse, maintain family units and ensure the child has access to education, health services and all necessary support.
- Perform advocacy work to help reduce the stigma of children with disabilities
- Occasional travel may be required to different parts of Sierra Leone where the Enable the Children team serves children with disabilities with local partners.
- Liaising closely with the Enable the Children team and reporting back on cases and completing all necessary paperwork and data collection with statistics.
- Help coordinate and invite beneficiaries to Enable the Children events, especially Family Support Meetings. This includes the need to work some weekends at the events.
Recruitment Requirements
1. Education
Diploma in Social Work, Gender or associated field; degree in Social Work is an added advantage.
2. Job Location
This position will be based in Freetown.
3. Job related experience and knowledge
Experience working with children with disabilities or other vulnerable groups Knowledge of protection issues is required.
Must have a willingness to closely follow and help to train on Child Protection Policy. Working knowledge of Word, Excel and Outlook is required.
Working Environment / Conditions:
This role is primarily community based that involves travel to all areas of Freetown throughout the year, meeting with families to address needs and resolve issues. The applicant should be comfortable working with both the Enable the Children team, their families, and partners in a variety of settings.
