The post holder works closely alongside the Country Manager as a senior member of the country team, sharing in strategic leadership of the integrated country programme and of the people and financial resources within the team.

As well as the specific role within the Sierra Leone country team, this post is part of Christian Aid’s Management Track. The post holder will spend a significant part of their time on activities relating to this management learning and development programme and contributing to projects across the Africa Division and the wider organisation.

The post holder is responsible for ensuring effective management and strategic development of Christian Aid policy/advocacy and thematic programmes. This includes strategic development and planning, fundraising, communications and the management of reporting and relationships with donors, staff representation and networking.

When deputizing for the Country Manager, the post holder will be part of the Divisional Management Group, an opportunity for being part of a group of people who are jointly learning, sharing and growing.

  • The delivery of programme and advocacy results that can demonstrate a significant contribution to Christian Aid’s corporate goals.
  • Secure external funding for programmes and ensure effective reporting and relationships with donors and other key stakeholders

In order to respond to ever changing demands within the environment, Christian Aid operates within an agile framework (both in workforce and operational) that requires from all employees, a high level of responsiveness and adaptiveness to processes and structures, making flexibility and a project based working approach the norm. Policy and Advocacy work

  • To ensure the development of  innovative partnerships and alliances in policy and advocacy both within Sierra Leone, and at the regional and continental level
  • To represent Christian Aid in policy dialogue and to articulate and share Christian Aid’s corporate policy, advocacy and campaign work with partners, networks and key stakeholders in Sierra Leone, West Africa and on the African Continent
  • To ensure the engagement of APU and GAP in Sierra Leone policy and advocacy initiatives and contribute to Christian Aid policy and advocacy development on Sierra Leone and global issues
  • To ensure colleagues in other CA departments, particularly Global Advocacy and Policy, Media and Campaigns are kept updated on advocacy work in Sierra Leone
  • To line manage and mentor the ACSO and ensure that opportunities for policy work and case studies are /developed in Sierra Leone, which contribute to the development of policy and advocacy at the Divisional and global level

Programme management

  • To line manage programme officers and ensure excellence of practice in grant administration and programme management including programme monitoring.
  • To share in making appropriate recommendations to Christian Aid regarding partner programmes and new partnerships
  • To contribute towards the strengthening and maintenance of programme quality
  • To support programme officers, where required, to mainstream gender and HIV in their programmes
  • To share in the development and maintenance of an overarching programme monitoring and lesson learning framework
  • To share in programme fundraising, donor reporting and management of donor relationships

Learning and Development as a manager  

  • To participate in events and courses to develop capabilities as a manager and leader alongside others on the Management Track.
  • To reflect on own practice and learning as a manager, with the support and guidance of a mentor within a structured learning programme.
  • To undertake visits, project work and other assignments within the Africa Division and wider organisation which will enable an exposure and deeper understanding of the work of other parts of Christian Aid and the integration of the country programme within the wider organisation.  This work is likely to include: programme management, fundraising, work with the churches and faith based organisations, policy, advocacy, campaigning and communications together with the business systems that sit behind these areas of work.
  • To understand and contribute to the shaping of business systems, culture and structure that enable effective management of people.

Share in the management of the country team     

  • To share in the overall leadership of the country programme and country team, alongside the country manager, including deputising in their absence.
  • To play an active part in the ongoing strategic thinking of the country programme:  including strategic analysis, strategic choices and strategic implementation of the country programme.
  • To be a line manager within the country team modelling the highest standards in performance management.

Safeguarding Responsibilities

  • Work with programme staff to ensure safeguarding commitments are monitored.
  • Include safeguarding indicators into project design.
  • Ensure the safeguarding spreadsheet is up to date.

Other

  • To ensure liaison with the CA Communications Officer in collecting and sharing information from partners and projects for use in education, campaigning, fundraising, media and profile work
  • To share good practice and learning from the Sierra Leone programme with the Africa Division
  • Where appropriate, to network on behalf of Christian Aid’s partners: within Christian Aid, with other development and ecumenical agencies; to promote or lead inter-agency or consortia co-ordination as required.
