Main PurposeĀ
The Family Support Officer will be responsible for supporting children with cancer and theirĀ families at Sierra Leoneās first paediatric oncology unit at Ola During Childrenās Hospital. InĀ collaboration with health care professionals he/she will be in charge of ensuring that childrenĀ and young people with cancer and their families receive the emotional, social, and practicalĀ support they need. Services will include a psychosocial needs assessment of the patient andĀ their familyās situation, provision of emotional support, information on financial support andĀ financial guidance for families, practical support and making referrals for other servicesĀ where appropriate. The role will also involve working with the wider oncology team in aĀ collaborative way, so as to meet the holistic needs of patients and their families.

He/She will
assess and review needs at diagnosis and at key points during the cancer journey, workingĀ in collaboration with the Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT)/ Oncology Medical Team at theĀ Hospital. This role is expected to identify and contribute to best practice, promote theĀ psychosocial needs of patient and their families, aid the development of services andĀ provide advocacy for patients and their families.

Key ResponsibilitiesĀ :
Needs assessments and support plansĀ Ā
ā®Ā To ensure the provision of high-quality assessment and care support planning inĀ Ā partnership with families.
ā®Ā To assess and review needs, initially at diagnosis and at key points during the cancerĀ Ā journey (relapse, end of life).
ā®Ā To individually assess familiesā needs at diagnosis, developing support plans for theĀ Ā patient and families that are considered to be at high risk of abandonment inĀ Ā collaboration with the medical staff.
ā®Ā To ensure that the support plan is delivered directly or in partnership with others.
ā®Ā To intervene and refer to relevant authorities, where any safeguarding needs areĀ Ā assessed. These may include concerns that have an impact on the family functioningĀ Ā and where there is an impact on the care provision of the child.
Provision of emotional support to patients and their parentsĀ Ā
ā®Ā To provide emotional support to patients and cares in individual and group sessionsĀ Ā to help them cope better with the impact of the cancer diagnosis at each stage of theĀ Ā illness.
ā®Ā Organize support groups and/or support for family members to assist them inĀ Ā understanding, dealing with, and supporting the patient with the impact of cancer.Ā Ā ā®Ā Support the parents to grow their own peer support group in prioritizing, planning andĀ Ā implementing projects to support families (accommodation, transport costs, cashĀ Ā support)
ā®Ā Signposting families, who require a greater level of emotional support, to otherĀ Ā relevant departments or organizations
Family education and information provisionĀ Ā :
ā®Ā To support the overall function of the medical team in delivering treatment and careĀ Ā by facilitating the communication between the families and the medical staff.Ā Ā ā®Ā To organize familiesā education activities in collaboration with the medical staff.Ā Ā ā®Ā To ensure families have access to the information they need in order to understandĀ Ā their childās illness.
ā®Ā To be accessible to families for them to ask questions and to know where to signpostĀ Ā families for accurate and helpful information.
Fundraising and financial supportĀ Ā
ā®Ā To compile anonymized case studies to be used in fundraising activities and toĀ Ā collect consent from caregivers
Data Management and RecordingĀ Ā :
ā®Ā To maintain records in accordance with the hospital requirements
ā®Ā To manage data and patient information in line with Data Protection guidelines
ā®Ā To record patient information and interventions in a non-judgmental way
ā®Ā To keep clear, accurate and timely written / typed records of support offered toĀ Ā patients and their families
Collaboration with the rest of the hospitalĀ
ā®Ā To aid with SOPs and any assistance needed in the rest of the hospital
ā®Ā Be present in multi-disciplinary team meetings and share your assessment,Ā observations and recommendations
ā®Ā Observe and assess the childās anxieties and communicate any psycho-social issuesĀ or concerns of both the patient and the care giver, to the consultants
Person SpecificationĀ
Qualifications:Ā Ā
ā®Ā A degree in one of the following:
oĀ Bachelor of Psychology
oĀ Bachelor of Social Work
oĀ Bachelor of Public Health
oĀ Diploma in Psychosocial Support
ExperienceĀ :
ā®Ā Experience and knowledge of working with children/young people in a social careĀ Ā setting
ā®Ā Experience and knowledge of working in a multi-disciplinary environment
ā®Ā Understanding of the impact of serious illness
