Description of Girl-2-Girl Empowerment Network programme

Girl-2-Girl Empowerment Movement is a local non-governmental organization registered in 2013. G2G is young women led organization based in Freetown which was set up in response to a PEER (participatory Ethnographic evaluation research) conducted with Teenage girls on their experiences of teenage pregnancy. This empowering process resulted in the older girls requesting support from a UK based organization called FORWARD to help build a programme to reach out to other young girls. The aim of the G2G initiative is to empower communities in particular girls and young women and to improve their knowledge of sexual and reproductive health and rights. They also set up to create a safe space to meet, share with each other and acquire new skills and leadership ability. The organization has first line experience in supporting and working with young women and girls from slum areas.


Job purpose

The Programme Manager is responsible for directing, organizing and controlling project activities, under the direction of the Executive Director and Board of Trustees to coordinate the Girl-2-Girl Empowerment Movement project in Sierra Leone.

To coordinate and develop the capacity of the ‘Girl 2 Girl empowerment movement’ and the establishment of the current networks/support groups. You will develop partnership with key organizations in Sierra Leone; fundraise for G2G in line with the attainments of mission of the scope of the organization.


Key areas of responsibility:

Management and governance support

  • Work with the Board to develop and deliver the G2G strategy and support the effective functioning of the Board activities;

  • Lead, direct and manage the day to day business of the G2G including supervision of staff and monitoring and evaluation functions; ensuring that programmes meet targets and within budgets;

  • Oversee budget preparation and ensure budgetary compliance;

  • Work with the Board to build and maintain relationship with funders to mobilise resources and oversee donor reporting;

Programme development and oversight of Girl 2 Girl Empowerment Movement, Sierra Leone

  • Provide mentoring and training for G2G staff members in terms of office management, strengthening their team building skills, and project management capacity.

  • Lead in developing Girl-2Girl Empowerment’s advocacy strategy and contribute to the development of the overall strategy for Girl-2Girl Empowerment’s programme

  • Implement activities and monitor expenditure.

  • Contribute to developing options for further fundraising and reporting to existing funders.

  • Establish and run an advisory group that will provide an ongoing programme development and management support – in consultation with the staff.

  • Build relationships with potential local funders and raise funding for G2G budget and activities.

  • Evaluate, monitor and maintain the effectiveness of the girls’ clubs and networks run by G2G members.

  • Support G2G staff members in establishing girls’ and young women resource centre.

Partnership development with local CBOs and NGOs

  • Build relationship with women groups and organisations.

  • Identify organisations that are working on girls’ issues including teenage pregnancy, FGM, child marriage and fistula and develop partnership on behalf of Girl-2-Girl

  • Identify potential partnership project funding available at local and regional level and work with the organisations on the proposals.

  • Represent Girl-2-Girl Empowerment at events, conferences and other important meetings.

General responsibilities

  • Undertake any general administrative and financial duties in relation to this post.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Qualification:

  • A Masters degree in Social Sciences, Project Management, business administration or a similar field.

Experience:

  • At least 3 years’ experience implementing projects in the non-profit sector and relating to sexual and reproductive health and rights of women and girls.

  • Experience in financial and project management and donor reporting.

  • Strong ability to network and establish collaborative relationships with a range of actors.

  • Ability to work well under pressure, maintaining both a highly organised level of accuracy and output; and to plan and prioritise work to ensure deadlines are met.

  • Demonstrable experience and skills in producing policy documents, developing policy positions, researching and writing on child rights, participation, development and young women’s human rights.

  • Ability to work in a team and also on his/her own.

  • Experience of working with girls and young people

  • Willingness and able to travel in the region.

  • Experience in conducting analysis and/or research on gender based violence.

  • Experience of policy analysis and/or advocacy work.

  • Good contextual knowledge of Sierra Leone.

  • Excellent communication and writing skills in English.
