Reports To:  Project Coordinator, Tree Planting and Care of Sierra Leone Red Cross Society

SLRCS is seeking talented, hard-working, and dynamic Sierra Leoneans for the position of Project Officer – Tree Planting and Care Projects

Date required: June. Duty station: Freetown with frequent travels to Kono, Bonthe, Pujehun, Bo, Kenema and Moyamba.

Fixed term – Six months with possible extension based on performance.

 

JOB SUMMARY:

The post holder will be responsible for initiating, planning, coordinating, implementing, and monitoring tree planting and care projects, in accordance with exiting national policies and regulations. The post holder will source funding opportunities for the programme and promote the active participation of the public, working closely with relevant ministries at districts and community levels, councils, community-based disaster management committees, volunteers and their coaches, and other pro- agroforestry organizations in Kono, Bonthe, Pujehun, Bo, Kenema and Moyamba.

Main Duties: 

  • Develop innovative engagement and educational initiatives in association with
    environmental enhancement projects.
  • Conduct targeted outreach to increase tree planting opportunities on publicly and privately owned land.
  • Create and build relationships with partners/stakeholders to develop a robust database of landowners and corresponding planting sites.
  • Generate agreements/contracts with landowners to plant trees.
  • Conduct nursery site visits.
  • Help to ensure that sites are properly prepared for planting.
  • Supervise planting and tending activities.
  • Assess planting and tending works and contractors.
  • Conduct survival assessments.
  • Manage program databases by entering project information.
  • General office duties and record keeping.
  • Preparation of complex project reports such as monthly, quarterly and annual reports.
  • Organise plans and prioritise workloads effectively.
  • Other duties as assigned by senior officers of the national society.

Physical Abilities

  • Must be able to work in inclement weather and variable site conditions.
  • Working some weekends and evenings to meet with landowners, complete planting operations or to work at fairs or other public gatherings to promote the Tree planting and weekend programme.

Education and Experience

  • Graduate from a forestry program or other environmental program preferred.
  • Minimum of 2-3 years relevant experience.
  • Computer skills and good knowledge of MS-Word, MS Access, MS-Excel, and PowerPoint presentations.
  • Strong attention to detail and organization skills in order to juggle both event pre-planning and accuracy in manipulating and tabulating partner/funding agency data.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Strong commitment to championing protection of the environment.

 

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities  

  • The post holder would be expected to demonstrate experience of managing and co-
    ordinating high value agroforestry projects in partnership with Ministries, Departments and Agencies of the Government of Sierra Leone.
  • Demonstrate financial management experience including budget preparation and monitoring project activities in line with cash flows.
    Be flexible and responsive to the needs of the service.
  • Work independently and as part of a team.
  • Define problems and produce innovative solutions against financial constraints.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing with a wide range of people including partners, senior officers, and community representatives.
  • Negotiate where interests conflict.
  • Represent the unit both within the national society and externally.
  • Appreciable understanding and application of protection, gender and inclusion in the workplace.

Duties applicable to all SLRCS staff

  • Actively work towards the achievement of the goals of SLRCS
  • Demonstrate competencies and proprieties as defined in the behaviour framework of SLRCS.

Languages

  • Excellent level of English (written and spoken)
