GOALGeneral Description of GOAL’s Work in Sierra Leone

GOAL has been present in Sierra Leone since 1998, with an overall aim to contribute to poverty and vulnerability reduction through the implementation of integrated, multi-sectoral interventions, with a primary focus on improving Reproductive, Maternal, Neonatal, Child and Adolescent health (RMNCAH) specifically addressing teenage pregnancy. GOAL is also improving rural water supply, urban faecal sludge management,Β  Resilience of the blue Economy Sierra Leone, Climate Resilience GrantΒ  and promoting social inclusion, empowerment and decent work through systems-based programme approaches and community led social and behavioral change. GOAL currently operates in Western Area, Urban (Freetown), Kambia, Bombali, Moyamba and Kenema Districts, with funding from Irish Aid, Charity Water, Community Foundation Ireland, and Fareo Islands.

 

SCOPE OF WORK:

GOAL, in collaboration with Kenema//Kambia DHMT piloted decentralized clinical mentorship using the current MOHS structure, using chiefdom supervisors and midwives to provide mentorship in CHPs and MCHPs. This is contributing to the programme Government of Sierra Leone’s effort (GoSL) to improve the quality, availability, and accessibility of reproductive, maternal, new-born, child, and adolescent health services.Β  There is also a focus on improving the quality of data especially at the PHU level.

 

GOAL is recruiting for one Clinical Mentor Supervisor (CMS) for the Irish Aid Clinical mentorship pilot in Western Area, Urban (Freetown).Β  The CMS will be responsible for ensuring that core components of the clinical mentorship by Clinical mentors and midwives are followed, document any adaptation to the original concept and act as the main focal point at the district level.

 

This position is needed urgently so applications will be processed as they are received.

 

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY :

  • With support from the HPM, work with the DHMT to support the clinical mentorship pilot providing Β  direct mentorship and on-the-job training to the district supervisors and midwives in 18 PHUs in Freetown, Western Area Urban.
  • Provide direct support in collecting, collating and of all monitoring data related to the clinical mentorship pilot.
  • Provide support to troubleshoot mentees on the mentorship topics.
  • Link with the community facilitators to provide feedback loop to the communities about improvement of healthcare workers’ competencies in collaboration with the DHMT.
  • Support the DHMT and facility staff on meaningful supportive supervision under the guidance from the health programme manager.
  • Carry out regular spot checks to PHUs to see how the mentors are delivering the mentorship package.
  • Contribute to the monthly PHU-in charges meetings and feedback perspectives and analysis of health data from targeted facilities.
  • Support and contribute to the regular on-going monitoring of the clinical mentorship and documentation to prove the concept of the clinical mentorship.
  • Ensure that regular updates on the progress of the mentorship pilot is shared with the DHMT and senior GOAL team.
  • Ensure that senior members of the DHMT and especially those chosen to lead on this are aware of what is going on with regards the mentorship
  • Document learning and share with senior GOAL health team colleagues.
  • Submit weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual reports to the HPM.

 

DURATION

March to December 2024, with possibility of extension based on performance.

 

REQUIREMENTS:

To effectively deliver this engagement, the applicant should meet the following requirements.

  • Female CHO/Midwife
  • Undertaken the Newborn and Mother HealthΒ  (NMH) training.
  • At least 5 years’ experience of working in a clinical setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and supervise others.
  • Experience in providing clinical mentorship/trainings in Sierra Leone, including on RMNCAH-related areas is preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and/or experience of having worked with district health systems.
  • Excellent English and Krio speaking/writing skills required.
