World Hope International (WHI) is a Christian relief and development Non-Governmental OrganizationĀ  (NGO) working in Sierra Leone with vulnerable and exploited communities to alleviate poverty, suffering,Ā  and injustice through Health, Education, Anti-trafficking in persons, Water and Sanitation, Agriculture andĀ  Livelihoods interventions. We seek applications from suitably qualified and competent persons to fill theĀ  following position.

JOB SUMMARYĀ 

The MITS Technician/Clinical Abstractor will report directly to the Supervisor and he/she is responsible forĀ  making sure that specimens are collected and ensure compliance with the Standard Operating ProceduresĀ  (SOP’s) and best practices. He/she should perform MITS procedures on all consented cases, ensuring thatĀ  procedures established for collecting MITS specimens and documentation are followed. They will beĀ  responsible for supporting consent process, and clinical abstraction in all facilities that the participantĀ  received care in following established protocols.

SPECIFIC ROLES OF THE POSITIONĀ 

  • Coordinate with the surveillance team and ensure that all established protocols set regardingĀ  movement of corpse to the Mortuary are followed;
  • Executes and ensures specimens are collected in the MITS room and assures compliance withĀ  established procedures and best practices.
  • Supervises MITS Assistants and ensure proper documentation of the collection of MITS specimens;
  • Ā Oversee utilization of standard protocols and sequence the specimen to the Lab staff for handling andĀ  processing;
  • Assures quality of MITS specimen collection and executes the transfer of specimens from the MITSĀ  room to the Makeni laboratory.
  • Observe biosafety regulations, ensure adherence to health and safety procedure in the mortuary andĀ  MITS room;
  • Work closely with data management and informative staff using electronic tools to provide highĀ  quality data and observe requirements for data protection and confidentiality.
  • Take active role in training and reviewing Meetings;

  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed and;
  • Any other duties as may be assigned by his/her supervisor, MS/PS Field Coordinator, and the TeamĀ  Lead.

RECRUITMENT REQUIREMENTSĀ 

Bachelor of Science (BSc.) degree in Nursing, CHO or SRN from an accredited and approvedĀ  Institution/University.

  • Minimum 3 years proven working experience with an NGO, INGO or Health Facility in similarĀ  position.
  • High level of sensitivity and empathy for bereaved families

  • Good written and verbal communication skills

JOB SUMMARYĀ 

Currently, activities under CHAMPS fall under multiple sub-projects/activities which include MortalityĀ  Surveillance (MS), Pregnancy Surveillance (PS), Health and Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS),Ā  Data-To-Action (D2A), and the Adult Minimally Invasive Tissue Sampling Study (Adult MITS). ThisĀ  position will provide scientific support to the research components of each of these sub-projects. TogetherĀ  with the Surveillance Team Lead, the Surveillance Coordinator is expected to coordinate operations,Ā  delegate activities and responsibilities while also empowering and providing opportunities for continuousĀ  learning and support for the team, especially her/his direct reports. In collaboration with the CHAMPSĀ  Epidemiologist/Biostatistician, the position holder is expected to actively engage in research, submittingĀ  papers, abstracts, policy briefs, etc. for publication. He/she will work with and encourage the CHAMPSĀ  team to further develop their research and writing skills

SPECIFIC ROLES OF THE POSITIONĀ 

  • Field work leadershipĀ 

Serve as the lead of the field (surveillance) teams and coordinate the core functions of fieldĀ  teams (the HDSS and nested projects), including those involved in pregnancy and mortalityĀ  surveillance.

Provide ongoing guidance and support to field staff to ensure accurate and high-qualityĀ  delivery of activities.

Oversee and work with the filed coordinators on training and monitoring of field teams’  performance, providing specialized training on pregnancy and HDSS protocols as needed.Ā Ā oĀ Conduct regular assessments to evaluate the competency and effectiveness of field staff inĀ  data collection and management.

Oversee and supervise the entire HDSS data collection processes, as well as provideĀ  oversight on the PS field work and data streams. Work with the Team Lead to ensure that allĀ  field teams adhere to protocols and SOPs related to surveillance activities and support inĀ  addressing any challenges or discrepancies that may arise.

Participate in the development of the HDSS protocol, SOPs, and field manuals.

Collaborate with relevant stakeholders to ensure that all scientific protocols areĀ  comprehensive and aligned with best practices.

Work with the field coordinator, supervisors, SBS, and community stakeholders to addressĀ  any identified problems in the field, including barriers to data collection, data discrepancies,Ā  or community concerns. Inform the Team Lead and Epidemiologist to implement strategiesĀ  to overcome challenges and improve surveillance.

Research coordination.Ā 

Liaise with other workstreams/departments to implement the HDSS and nested projects,Ā  facilitating coordination across different teams involved in surveillance activities.

Foster cross-workstream collaboration and information-sharing to maximize the impact ofĀ  surveillance efforts.

Overall responsible for maintaining quality assurance and quality control of the HDSS asĀ  well as pregnancy activities.

Implement corrective actions as needed to address any issues identified during qualityĀ  assessments in collaboration with the HDSS.

Participate in team lead meetings, providing updates and insights on HDSS and pregnancyĀ  surveillance.

Collaborate with other unit heads to ensure alignment and integration of surveillance effortsĀ  across different departments.

 

Scientific writing and reportingĀ 

In coordination with the CHAMPS Epidemiologist/Biostatistician, participate in scientificĀ  writing/manuscript development, contributing to the dissemination of findings related toĀ  pregnancy and mortality surveillance through research publications and reports.

Collaborate with colleagues to analyze data and communicate key findings effectively toĀ  varied audiences.

Work with the Data and Informatics Team to oversee data collection, data entry, dataĀ  cleaning, and management of designated data sets, ensuring the accuracy and completeness ofĀ  HDSS, pregnancy and mortality data.

Implement quality assurance measures to maintain data integrity.

 

Provide quality assurance by sampling data and verifying the source together with the fieldĀ  coordinator.

Together with the surveillance lead, prepare HDSS activities monthly report, and pregnancyĀ  surveillance activities, data quality indicators, and any challenges or successes encounteredĀ  during the reporting period. Present findings to relevant stakeholders for review andĀ  feedback.

 

Study oversight and management.Ā 

Work closely with the Surveillance Team Lead in budget preparation and management.

Assist in the development of new projects and proposals as the research continues to evolve.

Collaborate with stakeholders to identify gaps and opportunities for enhancing surveillanceĀ  activities.

Report directly to the Surveillance Lead with a link to the HDSS Lead in CROWN AgentsĀ  providing regular updates on HDSS, Pregnancy and Mortality Surveillance activities andĀ  seeking guidance or support as needed. Maintain open communication channels with bothĀ  supervisors to ensure alignment of priorities and objectives.

Be accountable to WHI staff (supervisors and field coordinator) that report directly to him/her.

Perform other duties assigned by the CHAMPS Principal Investigator (Crown Agents), theĀ  Health and Nutrition Manager (WHI), the CHAMPS Epidemiologist/Biostatistician (CrownĀ  Agents) and the Surveillance Lead

 

RECRUITMENT REQUIREMENTSĀ :

Minimum Higher diploma in Math/statistics, social science, geography, public health, CDSĀ  Health, from an accredited and approved Institution/University.

Minimum 2 years proven working experience with an NGO, INGO, or Health Facility/Ā  institution in similar position.

Minimum 2 times participated on data collection/ survey in similar position

Good problem-solving skills

Good written and verbal communication skills

Excellent interpersonal and good teamwork spirit.

Must be fluent in speaking English, Krio and local language within the area of operationĀ  (Bombali Shebora and Siari chiefdoms)

Proficiency in using MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook or ability to learn
