Job Title: Freelance Engineer

Duration: 8 – 10 working days 2 – 3 weeks

Context

BBC media action is the BBC international development organization use media and communication to reduce poverty and promote human right in developing countries. We partner with civil society, local media, and others to produce creative programmes in the multi-media formats which inform and engage audience around key development issues; and strengthen the media sector through capacity building. Our work is built on a insights from our research and engagement with communities. We have been in Sierra Leone since 2007 supporting  media development across media houses in the country on issues around governance ,accountability, health,  education, empowerment.

BBC Media Action has allocated funds from its  projects for the repairs /refurbishment of its office space located at 41i Derek drive,off spur road Freetown -Sierra Leone. Due to the technicalities involved in civil work /construction ,BBC Media Action requires the service of a freelance civil engineer to act as a clerk of work to both provide technical supervision of the selected contractor. The aim is to ensure proper repairs of the country office in line with the standard specification, to guarantee quality of work and value for money. The key function of the freelance engineer /clerk of works are summarized below:

•   Assessment of the nature and extent of works to be carried out in the office building (1 day)
• Participate in the bid process to collaborate the effectiveness of the bids presented in relation to the assessed works – (1 day)
• Produce a one-page assessment report of the bid with a recommendation on the most effective bid for the consideration of management (1 day)

Regular supervision of works and advice to BBC Media Action on quality and progress of the works (5 days)

• Report/Confirmatory note on the quality of the works carried out at the completion of works (1day)

Job Purpose

We are searching for a highly motivated and experienced individual to  supervise repairs at  the BBC Media Action  in Sierra Leone.

Knowledge and Skills Required

• Three to five years of experience in  civil engineering or clerk of works

• Ability to assess BoQ’s
• Ability to properly supervise repairs on a dwelling house /office
• Ability  to work calmly and to tight deadlines
• Solutions focused with a “can do” approach
