Job Description
- Ensure the temple reflects the beauty, cleanliness, and sacred nature of the temple experience.
- Maintain standards established by the First Presidency.
- Perform gardener/grounds keeping work, maintaining, and caring for landscaped areas, sidewalks, driveways, building entrances, and other assigned areas
- Train, motivate, and supervise a crew of full and/or part-time custodians or volunteers.
- Provide direction and technical assistance to gardeners and volunteers and partner with third party support, as necessary.
- Assist in custodial work to assure that church buildings are clean and orderly at all times.
- Resolve questions and problems related to grounds
- Typically responsible for up to 40,000 square feet/8 to 14 acres
- Typicially supervises a crew of up to 8 employees.
- Maintains and controls inventory
Responsibilities
Core Responsibilities
Landscape Planning & Horticultural Care
- Plan and execute all landscaping activities in alignment with approved landscape plans; select plant materials suitable for local climate and soil, and align seasonal displays to ensure year-round appearance standards.
- Implement and oversee schedules for watering, fertilizing, mowing, and integrated weed/insect control for lawns and landscaped areas.
- Prune trees and shrubs to remove dead/diseased wood and to manage health, size, and form.
- Stay current on methods, equipment, and cultivation practices to continuously improve outcomes and stewardship.
Grounds Upkeep & Presentation
- Maintain walks, driveways, parking areas, fences, and grounds to ensure they are clean, safe, weed‑ and leaf‑free.Equipment, Chemicals, and Inventory Stewardship
- Select (under manager direction), use, maintain, service, and securely store grounds equipment and approved chemicals; ensure accurate inventory control and safety compliance.
Facilities & Worksite Condition
- Maintain the grounds building and related facilities in clean, safe, and good repair; monitor physical conditions and promptly report repair needs to the manager/building engineer.
Team Leadership & Performance- Lead the grounds crew: participate in interviewing, provide onboarding and ongoing training, develop schedules, assign work, and support performance management and daily oversight.
Procurement & Budget Adherence
- Initiate requests for supplies/equipment necessary for grounds care and operate within approved budgets.
Clarifying Decision Rights & Escalation- Technical Decisions: Recommend proper equipment, techniques, and chemicals under the direction of the manager; implement approved selections and methods.
- Maintenance Escalation: Report facility or infrastructure repair needs to the manager and/or building engineer per established protocols; track to closure.
Qualifications
Must be a member of the Church and worthy of a temple recommend.
- Degree or certification in landscape gardening, horticulture, agriculture, grounds maintenance, or a related field
- Three to five years of practical experience in landscape gardening, horticulture, agriculture, grounds maintenance, or a related field
- Experience working in a temple or Church facility is preferred
- One to two years of supervisory experience, including coaching, scheduling, and performance support
- Physically fit and able to bend, lift, and carry items weighing up to 23 kilograms
- Demonstrated ability to operate and oversee the use of basic and specialized grounds maintenance equipment
- Working knowledge of modern grounds and landscaping technologies, including irrigation control systems, landscaping equipment diagnostics, and other technology‑enabled tools used to improve efficiency, accuracy, and sustainability
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook) for scheduling, reporting, inventory control, and communication
