Our Work In Sierra Leone:

Partners In Health (PIH) began supporting the government of Sierra Leone in response to the Ebola epidemic in October 2014. Recognizing the large need for continued investments in the health system after Ebola, PIH is committed to long-term health system strengthening in support of the Ministry of Health and Sanitation (MOHS), guided by the same principles as our emergency response and our work around the world: public sector accompaniment, integrated and comprehensive services, social justice, nimbleness and flexibility, partnership, community ownership, and evidence-based interventions. In the aftermath of the epidemic, PIH is committed to supporting the delivery of comprehensive health services in Sierra Leone, from the community level to the health center and to referral hospitals.

Position Overview:

The Nurse Anesthetist performs clinical anesthesia duties and takes appropriate responsibilities for direct patient care. The Nurse Anesthetist administers anesthetic agents under department protocols and guidelines and communicates patient status to clinical team members. S/he will have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to interact with other staff in a collaborative manner.





Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Specific Responsibilities:

    • Administers anesthesia to patients for surgery or diagnostic procedures.
    • Prepares preoperative assessments including health histories and physical examinations.
  • Completes postoperative evaluations in accordance with department policies.
  • Documents and archives patient preoperative assessments, pre-, intra and postoperative anesthesia procedures.
  • Participates in the development, documentation and administration of policies and procedures involving the administration of anesthesia for the facility.
  • Maintains accurate inventory and monitor use of anesthetic supplies.

In addition to other clinical responsibilities, as Surgical IPC Lead:

    • Oversee the instrument and medical supply sterilization process.  This includes allocating tasks so that the following measures are met:
      • Procedures are being followed and instruments are being properly accounted for at each step of the process.
      • Supplies from the wards are sterilized in a timely manner and returned to the ward
      • Have surgical sets for emergencies ALWAYS available so as not to delay life-saving measures.
      • Instruments are not left unattended or unaccounted for
      • Oversee hygienists to assure that supply chain data is collected in a timely manner and supplies are kept in stock.




  • Insure adequate coverage of the sterilization staff including approving and managing shifts, hours worked, and vacation time.
  •  Allocate tasks to insure other IPC materials are available (gloves [sterile and non-sterile], aprons, gowns, face masks, and face shields) for both maternity and main surgical ward.

Qualifications:

  • RN, or equivalent medical training and certification in Anesthesia
  • At least 2 years previous working experience in anesthetic department of hospital
  • Ability to work productively in highly collaborative settings while also able to function independently.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact professionally with culturally diverse staff, clients, and consultants.
  • Ability to work under high stress and fast-paced environments.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • A commitment to social justice.
  • Ability to live in Kono district full-time required.
