1.) Nurse Anaesthetist

Position

Job position: Nurse Anaesthetist

Location: Maternity Hospital of Pujehun, Sierra Leone

Purpose of the role

The Nurse Anaesthetist will be part of the anaesthesia and critical care team at the Government Maternity Hospital of Pujehun.

He/she will provide safe, effective, and high-quality obstetric anaesthesia services for elective and emergency cases and will be responsible for developing and implementing protocols and procedures on obstetric anaesthesia care in compliance with national and international standards, to enhance the quality of anaesthesia services within the second health care facility.

Working in close collaboration with the Gynaecologist and the Operating Theatre team, the Nurse Anaesthetist will support and supervise nurse anaesthetist students during their clinical practice period and contribute to training and capacity-building initiatives to strengthen healthcare personnel skills.

Key duties:

  •  Work in collaboration with the Gynaecologist, Surgical Assistant Community Health Officers (SACHOs), and other healthcare personnel to provide safe and effective obstetric anaesthesia services for both elective and emergency cases.
  •  Provide pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative care of patients, ensuring compliance with national and international standards and protocols.
  •  Carry out all nurse anaesthesia-related activities.
  •  Ensure the proper use, storage and maintenance of anaesthetic equipment and supplies.
  •  Develop, improve, and update, together with various specialists, protocols, and procedures for obstetric anaesthesia care, in compliance with national and international standards.
  •  Provide support and guidance to nurse anaesthetist program students during their clinical practice, fostering a supportive and positive learning environment.
  •  Liaise with academic institution and student's training responsible at national level and ensure the full compliance with the requirements of the internship
  •  Provide support and guidance to nurse anaesthetist program students during their clinical practice, fostering a supportive and positive learning environment.
  •  Train and mentor anaesthetist staff in Pujehun Hospital to become preceptors for nurse anaesthetist students during their clinical practice.
  •  Contribute to the development and implementation of training activities and capacity-building initiatives on anaesthesia care, based on identified needs.
  •  Promote quality improvement strategies based on the gaps, inefficiencies, and needs identified, and propose solutions to address them in a positive way ep4olep C0zkMl
  •  Support CUAMM's project team and hospital team in data collection and reporting related to anaesthesia activities and outcomes.

Requirements

  •  Nursing qualification plus Bachelor's Degree in Anaesthesia or a recognised qualification as nurse anaesthetist
  •  Minimum 2 years of experience in anaesthesia care both in clinical and academic environment; preferable previous experience in fragile/low-resources settings
  •  Fluency in English (reading, writing and speaking)
  •  Experience in training, supervising, and/or mentoring of healthcare personnel
  •  Strong knowledge of international standards for safe practice of anesthesia and patient care.
  •  Excellent interpersonal, communication, coordination, and decision-making skills.
  •  Flexibility and ability to cope with stressful and fast-paced situations.
  •  High level of professionalism, integrity, accountability, and confidentiality.
  •  Previous experience in obstetric anaesthesia is an asset.
  •  Previous experience working with NGOs, public health institutions, or teaching hospitals in developing countries is an asset.
  •  Adaptability to live and work in rural area

TERMS OF CONTRACT

Type of contract: collaboration contract stipulated with the HQs in Italy

Salary: TBD according to NGO salary grids and compensation policy (basic salary for the job position, with possible increase based on professional experience and rural area hardship allowance)

Rest days: 2.5 days for each month of work

Flight ticket: one return flight

Health issues: the NGO provides health insurance and covers the costs of any compulsory vaccinations

Visa and permits: the NGO bears the cost and paperwork for visa, professional registration, work and residence permits

Accommodation: provided by the NGO, it is generally individual, depending on the logistical situation and the availability of accommodation in the workplace

Other costs: the NGO covers costs related to housing utilities and internet; food and personal expenses are covered by the worker

Purpose of the role

The Nurse Anaesthetist will work to support on-the-job training and supervision activities for nurse anaesthetist students, during their clinical practice in obstetric anaesthesia at the Government Maternity Hospital of Pujehun.

He/she will be responsible for developing and facilitating on-the-job supervision, group discussions and debriefing sessions for the students, allowing them to reflect on and discuss their practical experiences, share challenges, and reinforce key learning points.

Key duties:

  •  Deliver on-the-job supervision for nurse anaesthetist students, reinforcing the skills acquired during clinical practice, in collaboration with the Operation Theatre staff.
  •  Organize and facilitate group discussions and debriefing sessions to review practical experiences, analyse challenging cases and share lessons learned.
  •  Design and deliver on-the-job training to reinforce key learning points, based on the need identified by the Operation Theatre staff and the students during clinical practice.
  •  Conduct one-to-one mentorship sessions with the students, offering constructive feedback and additional support.
  •  Liaise with academic institution and student's training responsible at national level and ensure the full compliance with the requirements of the internship.
  •  Collaborate with hospital staff to foster a positive and supportive learning environment for students that promotes professional growth.
  •  Collaborate with CUAMM's project teams on data collection and reporting on training and supervision activities and outcomes, and their impact on healthcare services provision.
