Medical Educator (Nurse) – Mentorship & Student Training Role
FSL Health Education Student Program

PROJECT: FSL HEALTH EDUCATION STUDENT PROGRAM
JOB TITLE: Medical Educator (Nurse)/ Mentor
DUTY STATION: Freetown, Sierra Leone
CONTRACT DURATION: 1 year (with possibility of extension)
TIME COMMITMENT: Approximately 12 -14 hours per month.
• 1 in-person workshop per month (4 -6 hours, usually on Saturday)
• 2 hours per week for preparation and student mentorship

STARTING DATE: The candidate is expected to start immediately after a successful interview.

About For Sierra Leone (FSL): Für Sierra Leone e.V. (FSL) is a non-profit organization founded in 2013 by committed individuals from Bavaria (Germany) and Sierra Leone. The organization supports sustainable improvements in living conditions across Sierra Leone through financial and material assistance in the areas of education, healthcare, and infrastructure. FSL’s initiatives span education, water and hygiene, as well as youth entrepreneurship.

Program Overview: The Health Education Student Program supports highly motivated and talented female students in Sierra Leone who are pursuing careers in healthcare. Through a combination of targeted academic support, professional development, and mentorship. The program equips participants with the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to successfully complete their training and transition into the health workforce. It seeks to address educational barriers, strengthen clinical competencies and practical skills, and prepare participants for sustainable, long-term careers in the healthcare sector.

In 2026, the program will work with a small cohort of 6 students:
• 2nd-year nursing students
• 1st-year medical students

Position Summary: FSL is seeking a committed and experienced Registered Nurse to serve as Medical Educator and Mentorship Consultant for the FSL Health Education Student Program.

This is a non-clinical role with no direct patient care responsibilities. The role centers on interactive teaching, case-based learning, and mentorship to equip students with the knowledge, confidence, and practical skills needed for real-world healthcare settings.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Teaching & Case-Based Learning Facilitation
    • Design and facilitate monthly interactive workshops for medical and nursing students based on locally relevant case studies (e.g., malaria, typhoid, maternal health, malnutrition)
    • Translate complex medical concepts into accessible, context-appropriate learning content for early-stage students
    • Guide students in applying theoretical knowledge to realistic clinical scenarios, e.g. patient care, infection prevention and patient communication
    • Provide constructive feedback in a supportive learning environment
    • Contribute to the continuous improvement of teaching content and curriculum
  2. Academic Mentorship and Support
    • Provide ongoing one-on-one and group-based academic and professional mentorship
    • Support academic progress and address learning challenges in a structured manner
    • Foster professionalism, ethical awareness, and leadership skills
    • Encourage reflective practice, critical thinking, and continuous learning
  3. Internship
    • Prepare students for hospital and community-based placements
    • Provide mentorship before, during, and after placements
    • Facilitate debrief sessions to reflect on clinical experiences and challenges
    • Support students in translating theoretical knowledge into clinical practice
    • Strengthen skills in patient communication, teamwork, and basic documentation skills
    • Provide orientation on local healthcare systems and workplace expectations
    • Support students in identifying and securing relevant internship opportunities

Required Experience & Qualifications:
• Registered Nurse (SRN or equivalent)
• Valid registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Sierra Leone
• Minimum of 3 years’ clinical experience
• Experience in teaching, mentoring, or student supervision

Desirable Qualifications:
• Background in community health, maternal or pediatric health
• Training in nursing education, pedagogy or clinical instruction

Key Skills
• Excellent English communication skills (spoken and written)
• Practical, hands-on, and patient-centered approach to training
• Ability to simplify complex medical concepts in a clear and practical way
• Empathy and commitment to health student development
• Professional work ethic and reliability

• Medical Degree (MBBS or equivalent)
• Valid registration with the Medical and Dental Council of Sierra Leone
• Minimum of 3 years’ experience in clinical practice or medical education
• Strong interest in medical education and mentoring or capacity-building in health education

Desirable Qualifications:
• Experience teaching medical or nursing students or trainees
• Additional training or certification in medical education
