Partners In Health (PIH) began supporting the government of Sierra Leone in response to the Ebola epidemic in October 2014. Recognizing the large need for continued investments in the health system after Ebola, PIH is committed to long-term health system strengthening in support of the Ministry of Health and Sanitation (MOHS), guided by the same principles as our emergency response and our work around the world: public sector accompaniment, integrated and comprehensive services, social justice, nimbleness and flexibility, partnership, community ownership, and evidence-based interventions. In the aftermath of the epidemic, PIH is committed to supporting the delivery of comprehensive health services in Sierra Leone, from the community level to the health center and to referral hospitals.
Position OverviewThe Nurse Anesthetist will be responsible for leading the provision of anesthesia services at KGH/MCOE and other PIH Supported Health facilities. She/he will be responsible for maintaining the records related to anesthetic drugs and supplies, tracing usage and supporting quantification process. She will also be responsible for providing preoperative, Intraoperative and Postoperative care and maintaining records on anesthetic procedures. Teaching training and mentoring staff on safe anesthetic procedures and pre/post of care of clients. He/She will also play a lead role in caring for critically ill patients in the High Dependency Unit, Emergency Wards, Maternal Critical Care Unit at the MCOE and other areas of the hospital as required. Provide anesthesia/analgesic options for all procedures within MCOE/KGH Campuses as required. Maintaining a safe and clean work environment that will ensure the highest standard of care and support to the clients and staff.Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide oversight and Leadership role for junior team members, supporting with the duty coordination and overall running of the Anesthetic Department
- Develop SOP’s, Policies and Procedures for the Anesthetic Team in conjunction with the Lead Anesthetist and the Maternity Team
- Provide teaching and training on these SOP’s and ensure that the Anesthetic Department meets International Standards in preparation for the MCOE Opening
- Work in collaboration with the Clinicians, Surgeon’s, OBGYN’S, SACHO’s to provide comprehensive anesthetic care according to current guidelines and evidence based practices
- Provide pre-operative, Intra operative and Post-operative anesthetic care for patients in a skilled and professional manner by:
1) Administer correct and individualized anesthesia to patients for surgery or diagnostic procedures
2) Use intravenous, local, caudal or spinal methods to administer sedation or pain medications during surgical and other medical procedures
3) Prepare preoperative assessments including health histories and physical examinations
4) Complete postoperative evaluations, care and pain management in accordance with department policies
- Carry out post-operative rounds on different surgical wards and provide post-anesthetic care.
- Support the theatre teams and other surgical teams in all aspects of daily surgical care.
- Support to implement and maintain the infection Prevention Control protocols by directly supervising care the care in surgical wards, minor, main theatres and wound care clinic
- Ensures proper care, storage and maintenance of Anesthetic equipment and supplies
- Ensures proper record keeping for usage of anesthetic agent and support in quantification of the drugs and supplies needed for provision of anesthesia
- Writes reports on anesthetic procedures during and after any surgical intervention
- Ensure and maintain the anesthesia database in collaboration with the MEQ team
- Participate in the development, documentation and administration of policies and procedures involving the administration of anesthesia for the facility
- Provide training and mentorship as needed for all staff cadres on said policies, new and current proven anesthetic procedures
- Work in conjunction with the Clinical Teams to ensure that quality evidence based care is given to all clients

- State Registered Nurse with BSc in Anesthesia from recognized College or University with current registration with at least 3 years of experience. Preference for personnel with more than 5 years of experience, most of which has been in a Low Resource Setting
- West African experience, registration and license is advantageous
- Ability to work as an autonomous practitioner
- Ability to work well in a team, be dependable, flexible, time conscious and hard working

Position Overview
PIH-Sierra Leone is supporting the Ministry of Health and Sanitation in the implementation of the five-year World Bank funded QEHSSSP health systems strengthening project that will implement a comprehensive Hub-and-Spoke approach in 5 districts in Sierra Leone through focused investments in staff, stuff, space, systems and nutrition.
Through the project, Partners in Health, in the leadership of Ministry of Health and Sanitation, will be supporting 3 health facilities in the district (Jojoima, Buedu and Bandajuma) through comprehensive health systems strengthening approaches to develop these sites as sites for comprehensive Reproductive, Maternal, Neonatal, Child Adolescent Health and Nutrition services.
The positions will be based in one of the health facilities in Kailahun: Jojoima CHC, Buedu CHC or Yawei Bandajuma CHC
The assistant nutritionist will work under the supervision of facility in charge and will support in delivering high quality nutrition services to the patients. She/ he will also be responsible for monitoring the standards of food being provided at the birth waiting home. The incumbent will also be responsible for providing counselling on Maternal, Infant and young child nutrition and providing nutrition support to clients identified with under nutrition.
Main duties and responsibilities
- Ensure the standards and operational procedures regarding the delivery of nutrition services are adhered to.
- Collate individual and monthly reports on nutrition support provided through the facility.
- Monitor the availability and usage of food supplies and develop a system for reordering so as to avoid stock out of nutrition commodity
- To assist in maintaining dietetic standards and provide diet counselling to patients at the health facility.
- To monitor the standard of food being prepared at the birth waiting home.
- Provide counselling to clients on maternal, infant and young child feeding practices.
- Ensure appropriate nutrition specific behaviors are being promoted at the Postnatal wards and in the OPDs
- Support growth monitoring OPD and provide appropriate counselling to the mother.
- Identify patients with malnutrition or who are at high risk of malnutrition and link them with the nutrition support at the health facility.
- Support recording and reporting of nutrition related data to HMIS and to MEQ team.
- Additional duties as assigned by the Facility in charge.

Position Overview
A Community Health Officer (CHO) generally applies his/her medical knowledge and skills to the diagnosis, prevention and management of patients that flows into the Wellbody Clinic or Koidu Government Hospital and any of the Wellbody Alliance/Partners in Health affiliated health facility.
He/she does this thoroughly following the principles of inspection, palpation, percussion and auscultation where ever applicable to find out the actual cause of disease, and also utilizing the appropriate laboratory work. He/she should consult the medical officers for discussion on patient’s care plan in some critical cases, respecting patient’s privacy and confidentiality as much as possible.
Main duties and responsibilities
- Responding to medical/health problems presented by patients including proper history taking, investigations, diagnosis, treatment and referral as appropriate.
- Maintaining confidentiality and impartiality.
- Promoting continuous medical education and provide mentorship to other junior clinical staff.
- Admitting patients requiring special care followed by investigations and treatment with coverage of the wards based on the roster.
- Carrying out specific procedures as lumbar puncture, paracentesis, intubation, incision and drainage, and other minor surgical tasks and thoracentesis when necessary under the supervision of the Internal Medicine Consultant.
- Give lectures and participate in clinical education sessions about specific topics related to the medical pathology of patients.
- Ensure and maintain the medical database in collaboration with the MEQ team.
- Covering the NCD clinic and the TB/HIV clinic if it is required.
- Liaising with other medical and non-medical staff in the hospital to ensure quality treatment is giving to the patients, and promotes health education.
- Ensures that all emergency cases are prioritized and seen appropriately regardless of the time of the day.
- Be willing to work long and unpredictable hours dictated by the needs of the patients.
- Perform other duties related to the role, department or project as may be required by the Medical Director or Clinician in Charge.
- Administer and interpret diagnostic tests such as X-rays, lab tests, and ultrasound scans.
- Assist in emergency care, including stabilizing patients and preparing them for referral to higher-level care when needed.
- Provide counseling to patients and families on health conditions, treatment options, and preventive measures.
- Educate patients on lifestyle modifications, vaccinations, and other preventive healthcare measures.
- Maintain accurate medical records, including patient history, diagnoses, treatment plans, and outcomes.
- Complete and submit regular reports on patient care and health statistics to relevant authorities. Participate in public health campaigns, including vaccination drives, disease surveillance, and health education outreach.
- Collaborate with other healthcare professionals and community health workers to promote health within the community.
- Work closely with other healthcare professionals, including nurses, pharmacists, and specialists.
- Participate in multidisciplinary healthcare teams to improve patient outcomes.
- Provide first-line emergency care in cases of trauma, acute illness, or sudden medical conditions.
- Coordinate patient referrals and transportation to specialized care facilities when necessary
