Background: EMERGENCY is an independent, neutral and non-political Italian organization that provides free, high quality medical and surgical treatment to the victims of war, landmines and poverty. EMERGENCY promotes a culture of peace, solidarity and respect for human rights.

EMERGENCY established the Surgical Centre in Goderich, Freetown, in 2001, along with a Paediatric Centre until February 2020.

   

When Ebola arrived in 2014, the organisation activated two Ebola Treatment Centres and two research projects. Furthermore, the Surgical Centre managed two First Aid Posts between September 2015 and June 2020 in Lokomasama and Waterloo.

Presently, the Surgical Centre offers high quality and free of charge surgical and orthopaedic care to children and adults.

Duration: 6 Month with possibility of extension

Location: Goderich, Freetown

Working hours: Full time – shift rotation

Reporting to: Medical Coordinator, Responsible Specialist Doctor

Scope of the position:

Medical Officers are physicians who manage various aspects related to patient care and may work, even on rotation, in different departments (INR, ER, OPD, WARD, SUB-ICU, ICU, and OT).

Duties and Responsibilities:-

Medical Officers’ tasks and responsibilities may vary according to the department and include - but are not limited to - the following areas:

  • Examine patients and assess their needs providing medical assistance and taking the needed actions according to the urgency and severity of the problems;
  • Take patients medical history, collecting information both from patients and from relatives or other medical professionals and register all the information of the patient in a clear way on the related personal file, indicating the reason behind each decision;
  • Produce medical report on the treatment of patients;
  • Provide basic surgical procedure in autonomy (DBR, PC, etc.);
  • Assist the Specialist Doctor during complex surgical procedure and/or performing them under direct supervision (ORIF, explorative laparotomy, etc.);
  • Order, perform and interpret diagnostic tests/laboratory investigation to obtain information on medical condition and determine diagnosis;
  • Prescribe or administer therapy and monitor patients progresses, response and compliance to the treatment itself;
  • Take charge of the patient in accordance with best clinical practice while respecting the rest of the medical and nursing team;
  • Provide specialized counselling to patients and relatives/caregivers;
  • Conduct daily rounds on rotation, in collaboration with others professionals and the Specialist Doctor, in WARD/, SUB-ICU, ICU providing the necessary assistance and updating the patients daily surgical notes;
  • Prepare admission documentation and discharge letters;
  • Consult and report constantly patients conditions to the appropriate Specialist Doctor and highlight criticality;
  • Collaborate and work well with other staff members and other departments to provide a positive work environment and a multidisciplinary approach to the patient treatment;
  • Be compliant with EMERGENCY guidelines for the treatment of patients;
  • Actively participate in the medical meeting (daily meeting, M&M meeting, etc.);
  • Participate in training programs or activities, meeting timelines and deliverables, if requested by EMERGENCY;
  • Train new staff, if needed.

Job Requirement:

  • Bachelor Degree in Medical Sciences;
  • High level of English knowledge;
  • Registrations to The Medical and Dental Council of Sierra Leone;
  • Good Computer Skills, including Microsoft Office;
  • Professional integrity, precision, punctuality, attention to details, ability to work even under pressure, proactivity and willingness to learn and to be always up-to-date with the developments of the medical knowledge are essential;
  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills.
